Be the change I want to see in the world

That’s the little message I have every time I switch on my handphone. It came from when I was reading a book about Ghandi and my favourite quote from him was “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” So it’s a simple reminder that I should criticise less and just do more. So why this somewhat philosophical post?

Last night a couple friends of mine went for dinner at Riciotti (where the food is still as good but the prices have gone up by about 15 – 20%) and the discussion found itself lamenting about overly fervent Christians who can sometimes be judgemental and archaic in their world views.

On the way home from dinner, I was thinking about a strong worded post on how my friends (and anyone else in the world for that matter) shouldn’t be subjected to such absolute and judgemental views. Then I go home, charge my phone, which died half way through the evening, switched it on and saw my little reminder.

Be the change I want to see in the world.

So instead of complaining about the egos and judgemental ways of others, this post took a different direction and is about setting myself a challenge. If you know me, I have somewhat of an ego and usually think I’m right :p Sounds like the overly fervent judgemental Christians I was talking about earlier. In the spirit of being the change I want to see in the world, I’m giving myself the month of June to learn to stop judging people :p I haven’t quite figured how I’m going to do that but I’ll be tracking myself and the choices I make in the next 4weeks. I guess when I think I’m right, I’m going to stop and remember the person I’m arguing with probably feels the same way as I do.

I’ll keep you guys updated on my progress … …
