Persepolis

Caught the adaptation of the graphic novel where the animated feature was quite the visual treat for the coming-of-age story. Persepolis is about an Iranian girl who grows up in the turbulent times of the 80s with a Granny who makes even the most liberal grans look like old fogies stuck in time. For me, the animation treatment allowed the film to discuss topics like war, sexism, religious conservatism in a poignant manner that didn’t come across cliché.

Quite the appropriate film for ushering in the year of the rat as well because beneath the layers of dark and heavy themes was a message of hope.

So at this juncture I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Lunar New Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai and may the year of the rat be a bountiful one for all 🙂
