AFM2007

It’s the America Film Market time, 10 days in Santa Monica … probably the only place in LA that I feel not-too-plastic. Even with the raging fires that have been recently causing havoc in Southern California, I’m happy to report with my sunrise view this morning:-

There isn’t any more pollution than usual and the weather is lovelier but before I start making plans for Halloween, I’m trying to hold out for one more hour so that I don’t sleep too early tonight and be able to out for the parties tomorrow 🙂

SQ38 in October2007

For the third time this year, I find myself on SQ38 bound for LAX … I’m starting to think I should buy a place in Santa Monica … ok, I don’t quite make enough for that but it’s still nice to think about it. I digress, back to my flight, with 17 hours to kill I was very grateful that I had an empty seat next to my 39K and guess what? There was no one sitting in front of me either 🙂 So with the maximum space an Economy Executive seat gave me, I slowly enjoyed movies I had to catch up on.

  1. Hairspray – Had a blast with it, Michelle Pfeiffer was a hilarious … wasn’t sure about John Travolta as a chick though. I still stand by the 1988 version.
  2. Knocked Up – Movie buddy told me I had to catch this movie, especially after Superbad. It was funny and I thankful, it was a movie I didn’t pay $10 for. I really like Paul Rudd who played the brother-in-law 🙂
  3. The Simpson Movie – I LURVED IT!!! It was funny and didn’t disappoint. The script work for a feature and the characters grew even more from the TV series. I can’t wait to get the DVD.
  4. Bewitched – Ok, this is a 2 year old movie but I remember wanting to watch it when it first came out because I was a HUGE fan of the TV series. So I finally caught it and it was the perfect plane movie, Nicole Kidman was a true embodiment of Elizabeth Montgomery’s spirit and Will Ferrell was funny as usual.

So all in all, I had fun and also managed to squeeze in 5 and half hours of sleep too 🙂

I’m starting to get use to these straight flights to LA and then I hear a rumour that they’re upgrading these flights to only business class … sigh …

A day in the park

There’s nothing like a simple afternoon in the park with family. So last weekend, we found some time, packed food (enough to feed a small army … yes, the Tans & Lams tend to overfeed), brought blank-ies, found a nice spot at the Botanic Gardens and had a relaxing afternoon catching up, playing ball … basically just hanging out together.

I haven’t seen my nephew and niece in a bit and they’ve grown so much. Ok, my nephew has reached kinda a plateau in his growth and he’s like a little adult now … so all the attention naturally falls on his little sister who’s like a sponge right now.

She’s sweet, warm and too cute for words. She’s quite different from her brother too. Unlike him, she loves to eat which makes her a true Tan 😛 Check out the endless munching on bickkies taken over the afternoon 😛

Watching the two of them, the thing I really miss about being a kid is the exuberant boundless energy to do mindless things like run around aimlessly in a park, more than that I really miss be able to make friends with just about any other kid in a new place. Within minutes of finding our spot, my niece and nephew with their limited language ability found pals to play with.

And here’s the latest thing from my niece. In the age of digital camera, she poses when there’s one pointing at her. The thing is, she’s usually too quick with the pose for a still 😛

She’s growing quick

When I bought this little pink swimming cossie for my baby niece, it was too big for her. Now my little baby niece is becoming a little girl and fits into it perfectly. Can’t wait to go swimming with her.  She’s too too cute too … objectively speaking too … don’t you agree 🙂

What’s your poison?

After reading this article, I thought to myself The Clinic at the Cannery in Clarke Quay has some serious competition from Down Under … then slowly the next thought filtered into my head … only in Australia can these things happen 😉

Doctors save man with vodka drip

Australian doctors have kept an Italian tourist alive by feeding him vodka through a drip for three days, medical staff in Queensland say. The 24-year-old man, who had swallowed a poison in an apparent suicide attempt, was treated while in a coma.

Doctors set up the drip after running out of medicinal alcohol, used as an antidote to the poison.

Medical staff said the patient had made a full recovery, and the hangover had worn off by the time he woke up.

He had been taken to hospital in the northern Queensland town of Mackay after swallowing ethylene glycol – a poison contained in anti-freeze.

“The patient was drip-fed about three standard drinks an hour for three days in the intensive care unit,” Dr Todd Fraser said in a statement.

“Fortunately for him he was in a medically induced coma for a good portion of that. By the time he woke up I think his hangover would have well and truly gone.”

He spent 20 days in hospital before being discharged.

Simple pleasures

The carpark in my estate is crazy. If I come home any time after 8, I have to park 3 carparks away and take a slow stroll through the blocks until I come to mine. Since it happens often, I’m learning to enjoy the stroll (except when I have to lug my Aikido gear with me) and try to catch a glimpse of any HDB secrets. Here’s my one of my favourite:-

The funny thing is these cats aren’t strays. They have collars so why do they wonder out at night and sleep on these chairs? Don’t you just love cats 🙂

Into the Wild (the movie)

I remember reading the book when I was in uni. It had a profound effect on me especially because I was going through a quarter life crisis too. I did remotely consider leaving it all and travel to some remote part of Asia. Now that I’m a bit older (hopefully, a little wiser too) I’m wondering if the movie will have a similar impact. So I’m looking out for this. Besides, I want to see if Sean Penn can impress me as a writer-director as he has as an actor too.

House @ 8D Dempsey Road

A couple of weekends ago, a couple of us tried out House. We’ve been there for dinner once and was intrigued with their spa offerings. So we made plans and one Sunday afternoon, we treated ourselves. This is us before our sessions, quite relaxed already 🙂

I had a divine full body massage but the price is is a tad high for me. So I still prefer our usual, Ayuthaya Spa where I reckon is the best place outside of Thailand to get a Thai massage. Anywho, House was still lovely enough. Especially when I had just returned from back to back work trips to the US and Australia. Best of all was the company, don’t you just like it when you get a free afternoon to hang out with people you can trust, laugh and just chit-chat about … mostly nothing 🙂

Tao Shu: The Warrior Boy

When a couple of friends at work, sit around and discuss what their next project is going to be there’s this sense of excitement and hope. So when I held the Tao Shu DVDs in my hands, I was instantly brought back to the early days of its development, even the difficult production days/nights and I very nearly felt the rush of the adrenaline all over again 🙂

Do I miss it? For sure!!  Enough to go back? That’s the bit I’m not sure about yet 😛  Meanwhile, I’ll just get my creative fix with my own scripts and planning for my short film shoot 😛
